Lose Fat in Monsoon Season: Rainy days make everyone want to stay in bed with a cup of chai and something fried. I get it. But if you’ve been trying to drop fat and the monsoon keeps messing up your routine, you’re not alone. Gyms feel far away when it’s pouring, walks get cancelled, and comfort food starts calling your name a lot louder than usual.

The good news? You don’t need perfect weather to lose fat. You need a plan that works even when it’s raining outside. Here’s one that actually holds up.

Why Monsoon Makes Fat Loss Harder

A few things happen during rainy season that quietly work against you.

First, you move less. No evening walks, no outdoor sports, maybe even skipped gym sessions because the roads are flooded or the traffic is a mess. Less movement means fewer calories burned, plain and simple.

Second, cravings shift. Humid, gray days make a lot of people reach for fried snacks, hot tea with extra sugar, and heavier comfort meals. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying pakoras once in a while, but if it becomes a daily habit, the calories add up fast.

Third, water retention gets worse. Humidity and lower activity can leave you feeling puffier than usual, which messes with your head even if your actual fat loss is on track.

None of this means fat loss stops working in the rain. It just means you need a few adjustments.

    1. Keep Moving Indoors

If you can’t walk outside, walk inside. Sounds silly, but pacing around your home for 20 to 30 minutes while on a call, or doing a simple bodyweight routine (squats, push ups, jumping jacks, planks) in your living room, keeps your metabolism from slowing down.

You don’t need equipment. You don’t need a big space. You need about 15 to 20 minutes and some floor room.

A simple routine that works well:

    • 10 bodyweight squats
    • 10 push ups (knees down is fine)
    • 20 second plank
    • 15 jumping jacks

Repeat this three or four times and you’ve got a real workout without ever stepping outside.

    2. Watch the Fried Snacks, But Don’t Ban Them Completely

Telling yourself you can never eat pakoras again during monsoon is a promise you probably won’t keep, and that’s fine. The trick is portion and frequency, not total avoidance.

Instead of deep frying, try air frying or baking the same snacks. Bhajiya, cutlets, even samosas can be made with a fraction of the oil in an air fryer and still taste satisfying. If you’re eating out or can’t control the oil, just eat less of it and pair it with something lighter, like a bowl of sprouts or a simple vegetable soup, so you’re not stacking heavy food on heavy food.

    3. Drink Warm Water and Herbal Tea Instead of Sugary Chai

This one’s simple. Swap one or two of your regular sugary tea cups for plain warm water with ginger, or a herbal tea like tulsi or green tea. You still get the warmth and comfort that monsoon weather makes you crave, but without the extra sugar that adds up over a week without you noticing.

    4. Eat More Fiber to Fight Bloating

Monsoon food tends to be heavier and lower in fiber. Add these back into your meals to help digestion and keep you fuller for longer:

    • Oats for breakfast instead of fried options
    • Leafy greens like spinach or fenugreek in your daily sabzi
    • Whole fruits like guava, apple, or papaya as snacks instead of packaged chips

Fiber also helps with the bloated, heavy feeling a lot of people report during rainy months.

    5. Protect Your Sleep

Rain makes for great sleeping weather, and that’s actually a good thing if you use it right. Poor sleep is directly linked to weight gain and stronger cravings, so if monsoon nights are helping you sleep better, lean into it. Aim for seven to eight hours and keep your phone away from the bed if you can.

    6. Track Your Water Intake

People drink less water in monsoon because they don’t feel as thirsty, even though your body still needs it. Less water can actually make bloating worse and slow down digestion. Keep a bottle nearby and sip through the day, just like you would in summer.

    7. Plan Your Meals a Day Ahead

This is the one habit that quietly makes the biggest difference. When it’s raining and you’re stuck at home, ordering food becomes very easy and very tempting. If you already know what you’re eating for dinner, you’re far less likely to order something fried and heavy just because you’re bored or the weather feels lazy.

Keep it simple. A rough plan like “dal, rice, and a vegetable” written down the night before removes the guesswork when you’re hungry and it’s pouring outside.

A Simple Monsoon Fat Loss Routine You Can Actually Follow

    • Morning: Warm water with lemon or ginger, followed by a light breakfast (oats or eggs)
    • Midday: A home cooked meal with a vegetable, a protein source, and a small portion of rice or roti
    • Evening: Indoor workout for 15 to 20 minutes
    • Snack: Fruit or roasted chana instead of fried snacks
    • Dinner: Light and early, ideally two to three hours before bed
    • Throughout the day: Water, herbal tea, and enough sleep

You don’t have to follow this exactly. Adjust it to your own schedule and food preferences. The point is having a rough structure so the rainy weather doesn’t decide your day for you.

Lose Fat in Monsoon Season: The Bottom Line

Monsoon doesn’t have to be the season where all your fat loss progress disappears. Move indoors when you can’t move outdoors. Enjoy your fried snacks in smaller amounts instead of cutting them out completely. Watch your sugar intake in tea, drink enough water, and try to plan your meals a little ahead so the rain doesn’t end up planning them for you.

Small, consistent choices during monsoon add up just as much as they do in any other season. The weather changes. Your habits don’t have to.

    1. Is it possible to lose fat during the monsoon season?

Yes. You can lose fat during the monsoon by staying active indoors, eating balanced meals, drinking enough water, and limiting fried snacks. Small, consistent habits are more important than the weather.

    2. Why do people gain weight during the rainy season?

Many people become less active during rainy days and eat more fried or high-calorie comfort foods. Reduced physical activity and unhealthy eating habits can contribute to weight gain.

    3. Can I exercise at home during monsoon?

Yes. A simple indoor workout with bodyweight exercises such as squats, push-ups, planks, and jumping jacks can help you stay active even when you cannot go outside.

    4. How much water should I drink during monsoon?

Even if you don’t feel thirsty, staying hydrated is important. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip water throughout the day to support digestion and overall health.
